How to Change Windows Keyboard Shortcuts in IntelliJ IDEA

If you're familiar with a particular action's shortcut, you can quickly access it by clicking and pressing the corresponding key combination in the Find Shortcut dialog. Alternatively, you can search for an action by name using the search field on the Keymap page.

When modifying shortcuts, it's essential to understand how they inherit from each other. Changing a child action's shortcut does not affect its parent action, but it does break the inheritance link, making both actions independent. Conversely, changing a parent action's shortcut will automatically update all of its child actions.

To navigate the Keymap page and find the parent action of an inherited shortcut, use the 'Inherited from' link. Some actions may inherit their keyboard or mouse shortcuts from other actions. For more information on keymap files, refer to the Location of user-defined keymaps section.

On the Keymap page, you can also duplicate, rename, remove, or restore keymaps to default values. When modifying a predefined keymap, IntelliJ IDEA creates a copy that you can customize. This ensures that your changes do not affect the original keymap.

IntelliJ IDEA offers several predefined keymaps, including one specific to macOS called 'macOS System Shortcuts,' which follows Default Mac OS X System Key Bindings conventions. There is also an 'IntelliJ IDEA Classic' keymap, which resembles the default keymap for Windows. Make sure to choose a keymap that matches your operating system or select one that matches the shortcuts from another IDE or editor you're familiar with.

To view the current keymap configuration, open the Settings dialog (Ctrl+Alt+S) and select Keymap. IntelliJ IDEA automatically suggests a predefined keymap based on your environment, allowing you to customize frequently used shortcuts to suit your workflow.
